Who doesn’t love the warm, comfy feeling of freshly dried clothes? The clothes dryer is one of the most indispensable parts of modern life. But it can cost you: After refrigerators, clothes dryers use the most electricity of any home appliance. Drying clothes doesn’t have to clean you out, however. - Upgrade to an energy-efficient dryer. Look for a machine with moisture sensors that gauge when clothes are dry and automatically shuts off. You can save up to 15 percent more energy than timed drying. What’s more, your clothes will last longer if they’re not over-dried.
- Move your dryer to a warm space. A cold environment, like the basement or garage, means a cold machine, which needs more energy to heat up and works less efficiently throughout.
- Close outside dryer vents tightly. Vents that stay open allow cold air from outside to slip into your home through the dryer.
- Wash better. Use a fast, forceful spin cycle at the end of the wash to squeeze as much water as possible out of your clothes, before they hit the dryer. They’ll need less time tumbling as a result.
- Run the permanent press cycle. This cycle includes a cool-down period in the last few minutes of drying that helps minimize wrinkled shirts and slacks. But as a bonus, it costs less to toss cool air than heated air.
- Clean the lint trap. Remove the fuzzy strip after every load to help the dryer work optimally and reduce the risk of fire.
- Dry similar clothes together. Sort clothes by color and weight. Light and thin clothes will dry more quickly by themselves, and you’ll avoid getting dark streaks on your whites. Then, take advantage of the pre-heated dryer to dry heavier items like dark cotton towels and jeans.
- Think full, but not overstuffed. Drying a few items at a time is a waste of resources, but cramming too many clothes in the dryer lowers the dryer’s efficiency, leaves clothes with more wrinkles and takes longer to dry. Air should be able to circulate freely in the drum.
